Educator Guides


Educator guides are developed to support academic standards, and focus on important topics, skills, and activities for students of different age and classroom ranges. Each guide is Based on the New York State Elementary Science Core Curriculum and the New York City New Standards™.
Connections Curriculum: K – 2
Physical Sciences Concepts:
- Observe and describe the position, direction, and motion of objects, such as on top of, next to, over, under, slide, and roll.
Scientific Connections & Applications:
- Become aware of and describe the importance of science and scientists in the world.
Scientific Thinking:
- Begin to ask questions and construct explanations based on observations of objects and events.
Scientific Tools & Technologies:
- Use technology and tools such as magnifiers, thermometers, balances, and computers.
Scientific Communication:
Connections Curriculum: 3 – 5
Life Sciences:
- Describe how organisms and the environment are dependent on one another
- Observe and explain how plants and animals depend upon each other, and how their characteristics help them survive in their differing environments (adaptations and interdependence
Scientific Connections & Applications:
- Begin to understand big ideas and unifying concepts including the relationship between form and function; order and organization; change and constancy; cause and effect.
Scientific Communication:
- Acquire information from observation, experimentation, print and non-print sources.
- Use information gathered from experiments and other sources to explain observations and events, including actively listening for alternative interpretations and ideas.

Life Sciences:
- Understand that an ecosystem's balance is the result of interactions and interdependence between the populations and their environment, and that this balance can be altered by a variety of factors, including human activities.
Scientific Connections & Applications:
- Understand big ideas and unifying concepts including the relationship between form and function; order and organization; change and constancy; cause and effect.
