The New York Hall of Science in partnership with MetLife Foundation and Target will provide FREE field trips to third and sixth grade students who attend Title 1 New York City Public Schools located in Queens and Brooklyn. Students will receive a Targeting Science backpack that includes five inquiry tools (tape measure, LED lights, stopwatch, diffraction grating lens, and colored filters) and an activity guide. The activity guide will include inquiry activities to be used with the tools at the museum, in the classroom and at home.

Participants must be:

In order to qualify for the free field trip, 3rd and 6th grade teachers must attend a 4-hour professional development training at the New York Hall of Science. During the training, teachers will be trained on how to use the inquiry tools in the classroom and during the field trip. At the end of the training, teachers will receive a free field trip voucher that must be used on one of the select field trip dates designated for this program. New York Hall of Science hosts Teachers as Makers: ISKME Professional Development Academy

October 2 – 3, 2010

Free of charge to teachers, this two-day teacher training opportunity is for the Maker inside each of us. We will explore how Maker-Teacher collaboration can facilitate innovation in the classroom. Makers’ Projects will be points of inspiration for teachers as we experience DIY inquiry and design. Participants will have time to brainstorm, create, reflect, and share how their experiences at Maker Faire and the Make Teacher Academy can translate into their teaching using online resources and collaborative tools.

Please contact Megan Simmons, Education Program Manager at ISKME , for more information about this grant-supported professional development course offered free of charge to 20 teachers: megan@iskme.org or 650-728-3322
