Grades: 4 – 9; Microbiology
What is a microorganism? There are several different terms used to describe these organisms: microbe, germ, protist, protozoa, algae, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. A "microorganism" or "microbe" is any organism that is too small to see with a naked eye.
This program introduces students to "Microspace" and allows them to begin to observe and classify its inhabitants. Students will learn that microorganisms are omnipresent, existing literally everywhere and have an enormous impact upon the environment and humanity. Through hands on exploration with microscopes and NYSCI's Hidden Kingdoms microbe exhibit, students can explore the world inside the microscope.
"This lesson was an intro to our unit on microbes. I think it was perfect for this!"
Hidden Kingdoms: The World of Microbes is an expanded program that includes two 45-minute videoconferencing connections.
