It’s Snowing Science!
Queens, N.Y. – Celebrate the snowy season with Crystal Winter at the New York Hall of Science. Crystal Winter returns to NYSCI for its third year with even more exhibits and activities. Learn about the symmetry of snowflakes, create patterns of ice crystals, and even step inside a giant snow globe!
Crystal Winter is available on weekends from November 28 through January 4, plus every day from December 22 through January 2 (closed December 25). The program, designed for kids and adults of all ages, explores the science and symmetry of snow crystals.
Giant Snow Globe
Step inside the Giant Snow Globe, a fanciful winter landscape of crystals and ice. Have your picture taken with the whole family and take home a special souvenir of your visit.
Photo packages start at $8; members receive 10% off.
Ice Formation – New
Create different crystal patterns at this fun new exhibit. Place your hand over the ice to melt it, then remove your hand to refreeze it and create a new pattern. Use polarizing films to change the colors of the crystal patterns.
Snowflake Bentley: The Musical
Live Science Theater Presentation
Catch the excitement of snow with Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley as he experiments with cameras, microscopes and snowflakes. Go on the musical journey of his life as he becomes the first to capture images of ice crystals in a small town in Vermont.

Susie Snowflake is afraid to fall! Ride along with her as she befriends a gust of wind and finds a new home on a lonely tree.

Crystal Winter Craft Workshop
Design and create your own winter craft projects while learning about snow crystals and the animals that make their homes in the snow. Craft projects include assembling a snowflake or creating a penguin or polar bear puppet.

Crystal Kaleidoscope Activity Session
Make your own unique crystal-inspired kaleidoscope to take home.

Glacier Run Ride at Exploration Station
Ride through the glaciers in this motion simulator ride. This nonstop action ride will take you to the freezing landscapes of the Arctic during the Northern Lights.

Take a Closer Look – New
Using a special camera, zoom in to see the crystal formations of a variety of rock specimens and experiment with different angles and magnifications.
Crystal Winter Village Display
Centered around NYSCI’s classic Steam Engine exhibit, the miniature Crystal Winter train winds its way through a whimsical winter landscape while kids play with table-top train sets.

Microscope Station – New
Investigate the crystal structures of your favorite minerals.
Crystal Video Touch Screen
Use your hand to create a computer-generated video of crystals dissolving in this large-scale touch screen exhibit.

Marvel at this artistic representation of comets in space. Every few minutes, a handful of dry ice chips drops into a shallow pool of dark blue water. The dry ice’s evaporation propels the shards across the water leaving swirling trails of vapor.
Use puzzle pieces and a mirror to create six-sided images of snow crystals.
