Online Poll for the Names of the New York Hall of Science's First Birds Opens
5-12-09

Queens, N.Y. - Online voting has started in the First Birds Naming Contest for the New York Hall of Science’s new budgies, which are part of the upcoming exhibition Charlie & Kiwi’s Evolutionary Adventure.
The Hall on Tuesday opened voting on three finalists chosen from more than 100 name submissions, which ranged from heroes to fruit to celestial bodies. Voting runs through May 20 and the winner will be announced online on May 23.
The finalists chosen were:

  • “Darwin” and “Gala” submitted by Anna Tolen (age 10) who chose the names because Darwin experimented his theory of evolution on birds in the Galapagos Islands
  • “Toto” and “Kapiti” submitted by Nicholas Alberici (age 17) who says the names are inspired by places in New Zealand where kiwis live (Kiwis are pictured in Charlie & Kiwi’s Evolutionary Adventure)
  • “Phenotype” and “Genotype” by J’adore Nedd (age 10) who submitted the names because they rhyme

Vote for your favorite names now!
The winner will receive a Family Membership to the Hall, an opportunity to feed the birds, and two plush budgie dolls. Additionally, all three finalists in the contest receive a plush kiwi doll and a Hall t-shirt.
The naming contest was held in anticipation of Charlie & Kiwi’s Evolutionary Adventure, a new interactive exhibition about the link between dinosaurs and modern birds, which opens May 23.
