Girl Scout STEM Day

March 16, 2013; 10 am – 2 pm

See rockets fly 30 feet in the air, learn about the history and future of space travel, solve design challenges using everyday materials, and find out about the science involved in action sports in this special event for Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts. Scouts will receive a special participation patch. Preregistration is required. $20 per person.

Activities include:

Air Demo – Watch NYSCI staff use air to crush and launch objects.
Science Design – Create your own magic box, kaleidoscope or softball design to take home.
Rocket Park & Search for Life Experience – See rockets fired 30 feet into the air and learn about the history of space travel. Then discover the future of space exploration in the Search for Life Beyond Earth exhibition.
Science Playground – Explore the nation's largest science playground and learn about motion, balance, sound, sun, wind and water while playing with fog machines, a giantlever, an Archimedes screw and more. Weather permitting.
STEM Activity Center – Discover a whole new world through math, chemistry, nano technology and sports-focused activities led by NYSCI Explainers! Try out the Girl Scouts' new STEM Program-in-a-Box activities, build super structures with dowels and rubber bands, take part in a workstation featuring climate change demos, and test out new probes and LED vests that can turn scouts into master
experimenters.
Design Challenge – Learn what engineers do and use everyday materials to solve design challenges such as building a popsicle stick house strong enough to
withstand an earthquake.
3D Movie – Watch an out-of-this-world movie that brings science to life in 3D.
Rad Science – Explore Tony Hawk | Rad Science and find out how the physics of gravity, force, velocity and balance make radical tricks possible in action sports.
