Bend, twist, light, sculpt and taste a new version of the holiday season. Workshops, demos, artist installations and food science explorations will present a wide variety of ways to engage and leave your mark on the holidays at NYSCI. Each day of ReMake the Holidays will focus on a different theme. Most activities are free with NYSCI admission. Some projects require a small materials fee.
DECEMBER 27 – LIGHT
Giant Lite Brite

Collaboratively create a giant lite brite board to help NYSCI ring in the New Year!
Seeing the Light

With folks from Skraptacular, rescue holiday packaging destined for the trash by transforming molded plastic into objects of beauty.

Bill Bywater's Ice Sculpting Tools Demo

Ice sculptor Bill Bywater shows how to carve masterpieces out of ice.
Bill Bywater's Ice Sculpting Apprenticeships
3 – 4 pm; $12 plus NYSCI admission for one child and one adult ($10 members)
Sculpt ice with heating elements and contribute to a group ice sculpture. Sessions held outside with ice sculptor Bill Bywater. Space is limited to 6 participants/projects. Recommended for ages 8 and older. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
USB-charged LED Grow Light Terrariums
11:30 am – 1:30 pm and 2 – 4 pm; $20 plus NYSCI admission for one child and one adult ($15 members)
Learn how to solder and work on a circuit board, while creating a LED grow light system. Space is limited to ten participants/projects per session. Recommended for ages 8 and older. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
DECEMBER 28: SOUND
Recycled Rockband

Create your own tissue box guitar with RePlayground.
Noiz-Makers of Tomorrow
noon – 4 pm; free with NYSCI admission
Musician and educator Suzanne Thorpe shows you how to work with circuits, transducers, paper clips, and old boxes to make a musical instrument that uses your own body to connect circuits and create a unique sound.
Recycled Orchestra
noon – 4 pm; free with NYSCI admission
Marvel at artist Nick Yulman's interactive installation that presents the unexpected noise-maker made from recycled every day objects.
Percussion Sculpture
noon – 4 pm; free with NYSCI admission
Using found objects such as buckets, boxes, pvc pipe, and sheet metal, collaboratively build a drum kit sculpture with artist Ben Garthus. The sculpture will be used for jam sessions through the day.

Celebrate the box by giving it a place of honor in your mobile. Using small-scale boxes that are unique in shape or eye catching in some way, staff from Skraptacular show you how to create a beautiful mobile.
DIY Greeting Card Frames

Upcycle holiday greeting cards and paper with RePlayground and transform them into a fun frame.
Origami
